Alternative Medicine Options

Massage

Massage therapy is used to help manage a health condition or enhance wellness. It involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body. Massage has been practiced in most cultures, both Eastern and Western, throughout human history, and was one of the earliest tools that people used to try to relieve pain. Via NCCIH

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management. Via Mayo Clinic

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a technique you can use to learn to control some of your body’s functions, such as your heart rate. During biofeedback, you’re connected to electrical sensors that help you receive information about your body. This feedback helps you make subtle changes in your body, such as relaxing certain muscles, to achieve the results you want, such as reducing pain. In essence, biofeedback gives you the ability to practice new ways to control your body, often to improve a health condition or physical performance. Via Mayo Clinic

Reiki & Energy Therapies

Reiki is a very specific form of energy healing, in which hands are placed just off the body or lightly touching the body, as in “laying on of hands.”

Light Therapy

Light therapy is a way to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and certain other conditions by exposure to artificial light. SAD is a type of depression that occurs at a certain time each year, usually in the fall or winter. Via Mayo Clinic

Homeopathy/Naturopathy

Homeopathy, also known as homeopathic medicine, is a medical system that was developed in Germany more than 200 years ago that uses plants and minerals, ointments, gels, drops, creams, and tablets. Treatments are individualized or tailored to each person. Via NCCIH

Naturopathy, also called naturopathic medicine—is a medical system that has evolved from a combination of traditional practices and health care approaches popular in Europe during the 19th century. Naturopathic practitioners use many different treatment approaches such as dietary and lifestyle changes, stress reduction, herbs, and other dietary supplements, exercise therapy, and more. Meditation & Mindfulness

Meditation is the mental training that allows you to slow down racing thoughts, let go of negativity, and calm both your mind and body. There are many types of meditation practices that are done all over the world.

Mindfulness, put simply, is putting the mind and body in the “now” or the present moment so you can focus on your thoughts, actions, and emotions without judgment or stories.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has evolved over thousands of years. TCM practitioners use various mind and body practices (such as acupuncture and tai chi) as well as herbal products to address health problems. Via NCCIH
